Case Study — Packaging Design
Maike Thekuwa: A traditional snack, reimagined for the shelf
Packaging that keeps a traditional food’s authentic character, while standing out next to modern brands.
Overview
What is Maike Thekuwa?
Maike Thekuwa is a traditional food product that needed packaging capable of preserving its authentic character while giving it a more modern, distinctive, and shelf-ready presence.
The packaging had to communicate the product immediately, feel culturally connected, and stand out across retail shelves, digital promotions, and other customer touchpoints.
I designed the packaging: layout, label hierarchy, colour, typography, print-ready artwork and mockups.
Problem
Modernise a traditional snack without losing what makes it authentic.
Thekuwa carries a strong sense of tradition and familiarity, so the challenge was to modernise its presentation without losing the authenticity of the product.
The packaging needed to feel warm, appetising, recognisable, and trustworthy, while also standing out enough to compete with contemporary packaged food brands.
It also needed a clear hierarchy so customers could quickly understand the brand, product type, flavour or variant, and key product information.
So the goal became packaging that feels familiar, yet fresh.
Solution
Traditional character, reimagined for the shelf.
- Authentic cues, modern system. I developed a packaging direction that combines authentic product cues with a cleaner and more contemporary visual system.
- A clear hierarchy. Typography, colour, product imagery, graphic elements, and structured information come together in one cohesive package, so the brand, product and key details read at a glance.
Front Brand, product and illustration up front.
Back Nutrition facts and product details, clearly organised.
- Built for variants. The system stays flexible enough for different product variants while keeping a consistent Maike identity, carried through to print-ready artwork and realistic mockups.
Outcome
A packaging identity that feels familiar yet fresh.
The final design gives Maike Thekuwa a more distinctive and professional retail presence while preserving the traditional character behind the product.
The packaging creates stronger shelf recognition, clearer product communication, and a visual system that can extend across different variants and marketing applications.
Rather than simply wrapping the product, the design helps turn Maike Thekuwa into a recognisable consumer brand.
Tradition, packaged for today.
